HOW TO GET TO ESTONIA

 

Estonia is located between Scandinavia, central Europe, and Russia, therefore there are multiple ways to travel over to Estonia across the land, water, and air. There are regular ferries running between Tallinn and Helsinki, and landing in Tallinn Airport places you right in the middle of the capital. 

 

BMW IBU World Cup Biathlon takes place in Otepää in Southern Estonia. Otepää is located about 30 minutes by car from the second biggest city called Tartu. Plane and ferry travelers will arrive to the capital city Tallinn which is around two hours by car to Tartu.

By plane

The flights from Oslo, Stockholm and Berlin to Tallinn are all under 2 hours. You can fly from Helsinki to Tallinn in 20 minutes, and from Helsinki to Tartu in a little less than an hour. More information about flight schedules is available on Tallinn Airport website. From Tallinn Airport you can directly take the bus to Tartu or ride three stops with a tram to the trainstation. Also many car hires are located at the airport.

 

The other option is to fly to Riga, Latvia. From Riga Airport it takes around three hours by car to get to Otepää, or 3.5 hours to get to Tartu. 

 

By bus

There are a number of international coaches passing through Estonia from central Europe, Russia and the Baltics. These are some of the main commercial operators:

  • Ecolines

  • LuxExpress

  • Eurolines

  • The bus trip from St. Petersburg to Tallinn or to Tartu is between 5 and 8 hours.

  • The trip between Tartu and Riga is 4 hours.

By car

When driving in Estonia, the following documents should be carried with you:

  • Full and valid driving licence

  • Proof of Insurance

  • Proof of ID (passport)

  • Proof of ownership (V5C certificate)

  • Your car will need to be equipped with beam deflectors, a fire extinguisher, and a warning triangle. 

  • Estonia has right-hand traffic and the speed limit in the countryside is 90 km/h and 50 km/h in urban areas unless specified otherwise.  Passengers are required to wear seat belts and lights must always be switched on. Estonia has zero-tolerance for driving under the influence.

By train

Around ten trains go from Tallinn to Tartu daily and vice versa. Tickets can be brought here Elron.

By ferry

The ferry ride from Helsinki will take around 2-2.5 hours (with exception of one ferry, 4 hours). The following ferry operators service the lines. Tallinn port is located a 15-minute walk from the city centre.
